How To Stop Those Sugar Cravings

how to stop sugar cravings

They seem to come out of nowhere. One minute, you’re sitting on the couch enjoying your favorite TV show, the next… you get this irresistible urge to eat something sweet.

These sugar cravings are quite common, can strike at any time, and are responsible for many failed fat loss attempts. Given this, I thought it’d be appropriate to discuss why exactly they happen and simple strategies for defeating them.

Let’s start with the reason behind them. For one, cravings – of any kind – can mean you’re deficient in some kind of nutrient. Therefore, it’s very important that you eat a wholesome, healthy diet that covers all the bases (and we’ll discuss this shortly).

Next, sugar cravings can arise simply by seeing something sweet. Personally, I get strong urges from time to time when I’m in Dunkin Donuts for my daily coffee. Those treats staring me in the face are sometimes hard to resist.

What should you do in a situation such as this?

Well, a little willpower goes a long way – especially if you’re exposed to sugars on a constant basis. For example, I go into that store 14-15 times per week. I’d be in pretty bad shape if I couldn’t say no. Given that, I’ve made treats in Dunkin Donuts off-limits for myself. And this “situational ban” is very important which we’ll go over in a minute.

Another time cravings can crop up is when your blood sugar is too low. And this ties in with the first way to stop them. If you limit simple carbs in your daily diet such as bread and pasta, you won’t experience bad blood sugar swings.

Yes, these do taste good, and you might feel stuffed after eating heaping portions, but after a few hours they can leave you ravished and send you straight for the cookie jar. So again, it all starts with a healthy diet.

Now, the less sugar you eat, the less you’ll crave it. So, clean out your kitchen cabinets and get rid of the snack foods. Furthermore, impose your own situational bans as described above. For example, if you visit Starbucks often for your coffee, make that store’s treats off limits. Otherwise, the temptation might be too much to bear.

How can you say yes one day and stick to your guns the next? Unless of course, you have that much willpower (but then again, you probably wouldn’t be reading this right now).

Finally, from time to time, give in and allow yourself a treat. In contrast to what you read above, this can actually keep those cravings at bay. After indulging you won’t feel deprived for some time.

Furthermore, if you’ve been sugar free for several days, stuffing your face with a sweet can make you leave feeling a bit “sick”. As such, you might even build a negative association with sugary foods and crave them less without any more effort. And what could be better than that?
